Jace took some solace in receiving his first XP since he’d become a demigod. He had been starting to worry that he’d stalled in his efforts to level. It burned his blood that Finn and Bianca had escaped, though he knew they’d be back. It meant increasing their defenses was an absolute priority. He blinked as Nicolette wiped her thumb across his bleeding lip and then rose on her tiptoes to kiss him gently. The Shrine Mage whispered, “Easy, love. It can’t be a surprise that the lich has power over life and death.”

Jace shivered at the thought. Killing his enemies once had been trouble enough—what would his life be like if he had to kill them over and over? The idea caused his stomach to churn. His eyes took in the look of wicked anticipation on Nicolette’s face, and his head cocked to the side as he asked her, “Why do you look so happy about this?”

The healer drew the wand from her belt, the glint in her lavender eyes sparking into rage. “Because they were kind enough to provide us quite a few corpses.”

Jace smiled slowly himself, looking around to see the dead dragon-folk scattered around their base. With Nicolette’s new wand, Finn and Bianca had just increased their numbers. He started to chuckle softly. “Yes, that is something to celebrate.”
